Riverend

Riverend

The city of Riverend was formerly two sister cities lying on each side of the Lorione River. Growing from fishing villages to trade ports, each city was ran independently and relied on its own resources. During times of war the cities pooled these resources and their armies for mutual protection. This arrangement lasted for centuries, but the War of the Wizards proved too devastating. When the war came to Khazanul, most of North Riverend was burned to the ground as two warring wizard factions hurled flames at one another. After the war had ended and the smoke had cleared, the two cities merged, South Riverend taking many refugees and providing food and protection to those left in the north.

Today, most of North Riverend is rundown. Large areas that were burned down remain vacant and most neighborhoods are slums. Any infrastructure that was left is in a state of disrepair and the district is largely ignored by the cities government. North Riverend currently has very little meaningful representation on the city’s council. While there are no laws against traveling between the two districts, guards on the city’s two public bridges are known to harass and turn away “undesirables” attempting to head south. Several gangs vie for control of the slums, although few make any lasting claims.

South Riverend is a different story. While the north district took much of the brunt of the War, the south district was left largely untouched. The cities infrastructure remains is pristine shape and the harbor is busy with trade. The location of the city makes it a prime destination for any trade between the Dwarf holds further up the river and merchant ships heading up and down the coast. This has led some families securing fortunes and rising to prominence. The city’s council, once presided by blue blooded oligarchs is now filled with “new money” merchant families, creating a new form of nobility in the old city
